What do you want from me?

Okay, I have had the Receptacle running on and off for about three years now, and I have yet to get a real upswing in readers. True, I don't have finely-crafted rants that get me laid off or snarky movie reviews, but dammit, there is only so much a man can do without completely ripping off someone else.

I fiddled with Feedburner, I tickled

Powered by ScribeFire.

Twitter, and I even signed on to Sitemeter, which is kinda pointless when every traffic report is filled with zeroes. I changed the layout, I tried to blog about more than my crippling emotional issues, I even showed you the greatest video game EVAR.

So now I ask you, my legions leagues roomful of readers: what do you want me to bitch about? Celebrities? Video games? Cat toliet training? Short stories? Porn? What?

And to my fellow bloggers: what did you do to get more attention, aside from servicing lonely sailors (you know who you are)?

Come on, feel free to comment (one of the blog tips I keep reading says I have to say that a lot). Give me something to work with. HELP ME HELP YOU.

I mean, Beauty and the Geek is canceled, and Charm School hasn't been back yet. I am going nowhere near I Love Money, so don't bother asking.

5 brain pickings:

  1. I don't know that I'm the guy to ask - I average about 100 hits a day, which ain't bad I suppose, but not exactly a reader magnet either. The trick, of course, is commenting on OTHER people's blogs. That's not a plug for me - that's just how it works. You comment on other blogs (good comments, not that "Nice blog!" bullshit), then that blogger and their readers may swing by your place sometime.

    Patience, grasshopper. Patience.

The new layout is pretty badass though.

  2. I agree, Vermillion. You have to go out and hoof it in the blogging world. Make them interested in you as a random person, and they'll wander over to see what other clever/stupid/sexy/wtf? kinda of things you have to say in the safety of your own site. I myself wandered over here after reading your comments on Pajiba and really liking what you had to say...and now I try to get over as much as I can (which hasn't been that often, I have to admit...real world issues suck). Patience, footwork, shameless attention-whoring...it all goes well together, like a finely brewed stew....mmmm....stew....

I do like the new layout. Easier on the eyes, with all that white space gone. You got this, man!

  3. I hate to tell you this, but if the main reason you're blogging is to get attention, you're probably doing it for the wrong reasons. When I started my litelysalted blog, it was mostly because I was working at a new job where I didn't have people and friends to talk to and share with my constant (ahem) witticisms, rants and whining. It was both a cathartic and creative outlet. And then for whatever reason, people liked what I had to say and I attracted attention to the right people which opened greater opportunities.

But make no mistake: I never expected or cared if litelysalted became a popular site. Having a successful personal blog is a tremendously difficult endeavor -- and off the top of my head I can think of only a few (like Chez) who have managed to pull it off.

Anyway, I guess my point is (if I haven't already made so much clear) is just write what you enjoy because you enjoy it. And if you can't do that than fuck it.

  4. In addition, you could try posting more frequently. I found your blog through Pajiba too, and was checking it every day. I may be wrong, but it seems like the last few months there haven't been as many posts.

  5. Yeah, you are all right.

I suppose the main thing I should do is post more, like riles said. The audience comes for the posts, if there are none, what's the point?

But I am still going to try some new things. And hopefully after this Thursday, you will be in for a special treat. ;)

And I am glad you like the layout so much. It does look pretty cool, huh?
